How to use a VPN on PS4

Using VPN with your PS4 is possible, but it’s not as simple as installing an application. We show you three ways you can manage VPN on your PlayStation.

On cellphones and laptops, it’s easy to install and use VPN services. But not on PS4. Unlike other devices, you can’t just browse the Sony PlayStation Store, find the NordVPN or ExpressVPN application and manage connections.

1

In fact, you won’t find a VPN application at all because PS4 doesn’t support it. Fortunately there are several ways to use VPN so that you can access other areas of Netflix, get early access to new PS4 games, improve slow online connections and more.

Why do I use VPN on my PS4?

Before we explain various methods, let’s talk about why you might want to use VPN on a game console. First, this can reduce your ping, which means a reduction in lag. In fact, some VPN providers connect console users to special P2P & game servers that send your traffic through ‘hotspots’ between data centers.

Apart from improving the performance of online games, you might also be able to access games before they are available in your country. Games released on the same day are usually available in Australia a few hours before the UK and US. However, using VPN, you can fool your console into thinking you are in Australia and provide early access to the game.

Oh, and using the default PS4 browser, you can access geographically locked content from all over the world.

Does VPN work on PS4?

The short answer is yes, you can get all the benefits of VPN on PS4. The big problem is that you cannot configure the VPN service or install applications directly on the console. This means the process is a little more involved, but there are three main options that are open to you.

Option 1: Use VPN on your router

Because your PS4 gets an internet connection from your router, this is the next device in the chain that can provide a VPN connection.

Many routers support VPN connections and all you need to do is enter your account details manually into your Wi-Fi router settings. The steps vary according to your router brand and VPN service, meaning that it’s almost impossible for us to explain how to do it here.

However, the general process is to log in to your router, find the settings and look for the VPN page. Here, you will be asked to enter details including:

  • Name of service
  • Server address
  • Your account name / email address
  • Your password
  • Previously shared key for encryption

So this method requires a leap through a few hoops and a little technical knowledge, so if it sounds too troublesome, then look at one of the other options we describe below.

Also note that running VPN on your router means that every device connected to the internet must use a VPN connection, and that can cause problems for some devices.

If your router does not support VPN connections, you can buy a Wi-Fi router that buys a Wi-Fi router from ExpressVPN or from suppliers such as FlashRouters. This is not the cheapest option, but it is the easiest way to install VPN on your PS4.

3
Of course, you have to decide which provider to use. NordVPN is one of the best all-rounder, and is a good choice for those who want to enter VPN details manually because it has many tutorials on how to do it on various routers on its website.

But you can find a number of alternatives in our best VPN service suite.

Option 2: Set up VPN for PS4 through your Mac

If you don’t want to run your entire home network through a VPN router, another option is to use a Mac and an Ethernet cable, if you have both. Make sure your Mac has an Ethernet and Wi-Fi port, and is within range of your console.

Oh, and list for VPN providers too – we have a list of the best Mac VPNs if you need help choosing.

  1. Install the VPN software of your choice.
  2. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the back of your Mac and the other end to the PS4.
  3. Go to System Preferences> Sharing and select Internet Sharing from the list on the left.
  4. From the ‘Share your connection from’ drop-down menu, choose Wi-Fi.
  5. From the ‘To computers using’ list, make sure Ethernet is checked.
  6. Check the box to the left of Internet Sharing in the list to enable sharing of your internet connection between your Mac and PS4. A green icon will be displayed if successful.
  7. Open the VPN software on your Mac and connect to the server you chose.
  8. On your PS4, go to Settings> Network Settings> Manage Internet Connection> Use LAN Cable and select the Easy connection method. This will automatically scan and manage your Ethernet connection.
  9. Select “Don’t Use a Proxy Server” when prompted.
  10. You can test your internet connection if you want, and if all goes well, your PS4 must now be connected to the internet via VPN.

Option 3: Set up VPN for PS4 through your PC

There are also ways to share connections from Windows. This is basically the same method as connecting with Mac but Windows is equivalent to Internet Sharing. As above, your computer will need an Ethernet and Wi-Fi port (or a second Ethernet port) because it must be able to connect to your broadband router for an internet connection.

Also, make sure you register with the VPN provider because you will need login details.

  1. Install the VPN software of your choice on your PC.
  2. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the back of your PC (or laptop) and the other end to the PS4
  3. Go to Control Panel> Network and Internet> Network and Sharing Center and select Change Adapter Settings on the left side of the window.
  4. Right-click the icon with the VPN title you selected and click Properties.
  5. Open the Sharing tab and make sure ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’ selected. (see picture below)
  6. Select Home Network Connection and select a home internet connection from the drop-down menu that I want to share with your PS4.
  7. On your PS4, go to Settings> Network Settings> Manage Internet Connection> Use LAN Cable and select the Easy connection method. This will automatically scan and manage your Ethernet connection.
  8. Select “Don’t Use a Proxy Server” when prompted.
  9. You can test your internet connection if you want, and if all goes well, your PS4 must now be connected to the internet via VPN.

And so it is! Three easy ways to connect your PS4 to the internet using VPN and reap the benefits.
